Agartala, 23rd June 2025:  Two well-known schools located just 100 meters from the Belonia Police Station were ransacked last night triggering public outrage over lax security measures in the heart of the South District’s administrative hub.

The Belonia BKI Vidyajyoti Class XII School and the Belonia Government Class XII Girls’ School situated opposite each other near the national highway were simultaneously targeted. Thieves broke into nine rooms across both campuses, vandalizing around 50 cupboards and lockers. From BKI School, Rs 50,000 in cash, computer hardware and CCTV storage devices were looted. The Girls’ School reported the theft of 25 to 30 digital tablets and an additional Rs 3,000 in cash.

The incident came to light Monday morning, leaving teachers and staff stunned. A forensic team arrived shortly after, and police have launched an investigation. Municipal Council Chairperson Nikhil Chandra Gop and Standing Committee President Anupam Chakraborty visited the scene.

Thefts taking place so close to a police station have raised sharp questions about the effectiveness of local policing in Belonia, especially given its status as the South District headquarters. Fear and frustration now grip educators and residents alike, as calls grow for urgent improvements in night-time surveillance and law enforcement accountability.
