Agartala, 27th February 2024: In a major crackdown on the illegal drug trade, the Agartala East police station arrested two men from Chandrapur ISBT bus stand on Tuesday morning and seized 10 kg of dry ganja from their possession. The accused have been identified as Dhananjay Biswas, a resident of Madhupur Bankumari area, and Niranjan Sarkar, a resident of Charipara area. They have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and taken to the police station for interrogation.
According to Sanjit Sen, the officer-in-charge (OC) of the East police station, the police received a tip-off that two men would arrive at the Chandrapur ISBT station with a consignment of ganja and then leave for Ambasa. Acting on the information, the police team laid a trap and nabbed the duo when they tried to flee from the spot. The police recovered 10 kg of dry ganja from their bags, which has an estimated black market value of around Rs 40,000 in the state and Rs 4 lakh outside the state.
The police also learned from the arrested men about the source of the ganja and the other people involved in the racket. The police have launched an investigation to trace the network and arrest the other culprits. The accused will be produced before the court on Saturday, the OC said.
The police have appealed to the public to cooperate with them in curbing the menace of drug trafficking and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The police have also assured that the identity of the informers will be kept confidential.
