Agartala, 19th August 2025: Dharmanagar police have arrested two alleged kingpins of an interstate motorcycle theft syndicate operating across Tripura, Assam and Bangladesh. The arrests come amid a worrying surge in bike thefts across the region with many stolen vehicles reportedly trafficked across international and state borders.
The suspects Bacchu Mia (40) of Dharmanagar’s Shakaibari area and Hasan Ahmed (35) of Barigram in Assam’s Sribhumi district were arrested following a targeted investigation based on CCTV footage from recent thefts in the Dharmanagar area. Acting on leads, a large police team led by Additional Superintendent of Police Kamal Debbarma raided Bacchu Mia’s in-laws’ residence in North Padmabil village under Panisagar subdivision, where he was taken into custody.
According to Officer-in-Charge Mina Debbarma, both suspects are currently under four-day police remand and are being interrogated intensively. Bacchu Mia’s confession led investigators to Hasan Ahmed, whose garage allegedly served as a hub for storing stolen bikes before they were smuggled into various parts of Assam and across the Bangladesh border.
Tripura’s geographical vulnerability, bordering Bangladesh on three sides and sharing porous boundaries with Assam and Mizoram has made it a hotspot for cross-border criminal activity. Police sources confirm that several stolen motorcycles have already been traced to locations outside the state and across international lines.
Authorities say the arrests have yielded “several sensational disclosures,” and further operations are underway to dismantle the broader network. Investigators believe they are closing in on the masterminds behind the racket, which has been fueling a spike in vehicle thefts across the region.
