Two major police operations at Kumarghat; Burmese cigarettes worth 10 lakh seized, three held

Date:

Agartala, 7th November 2026 : Tightening its vigil against the transportation of illegal goods ahead of Diwali, Kumarghat police carried out two successful operations on the same night, recovering a huge consignment of Burmese cigarettes and a stock of unauthorised firecrackers. Three persons were detained, while two vehicles were seized during the operations.

The first operation was conducted at 91 Mile following a tip-off about the transportation of illegal cigarettes. Police, led by Officer-in-Charge Sanjay Das, intercepted a WagonR car bearing registration number AS-01-EH-9983. A thorough search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of 22 cartons containing 2,12,200 Burmese cigarettes. The seized consignment is estimated to be worth around ₹10 lakh in the market. The vehicle and cigarettes were confiscated, while the driver and another occupant were taken into custody for questioning.

In another operation, a police team conducting mobile patrols in the Saydabari area intercepted an electric auto-rickshaw. Upon searching the vehicle, personnel recovered 17 packets of different types of firecrackers valued at approximately ₹10,000. Police suspect that the firecrackers were being transported from Kumarghat to Sonaimuri. The auto-rickshaw was seized, and its driver was detained.

OC Sanjay Das said that special surveillance measures have been put in place during the festive season to check the movement of prohibited and potentially dangerous materials. He added that checkpoint inspections and mobile patrols have been intensified to prevent activities that could endanger public safety.

The twin operations underline the police administration’s efforts to curb illegal transportation and ensure safe festive celebrations. Kumarghat police have reiterated that such drives will continue in the coming days to maintain law and order and protect public interest.
