Agartala, 6th September 2025: Two Nigerian nationals were detained by local residents at Shantirbazar Railway Station late Friday night after their arrival raised suspicions among auto drivers and bystanders.
According to sources, an auto-rickshaw driver from Belonia arrived at the station to pick up the two foreigners, prompting concern among local drivers and residents. The situation escalated when the group collectively detained the Nigerians and alerted authorities.
Upon receiving the report, Officer-in-Charge Raju Datta and Sub-Inspector Samir Biswas from Santirbazar Police Station rushed to the scene. The two individuals were taken into custody and brought to the station for verification.
Initial investigation revealed that both Nigerian nationals possessed valid passports and visas. However, police have launched a formal inquiry to verify the authenticity of their documents and determine the purpose of their visit. The auto driver from Belonia, suspected of being involved, has also been detained for questioning.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Bappi Debbarma confirmed the incident to the media, stating that the two foreigners are currently being interrogated. He also highlighted the absence of Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel at Santirbazar station, which has reportedly made the area vulnerable to illicit activities.
