Acting on a tip-off, police raided the residence of one Farid Mia, where they seized 1,669 Yaba tablets worth around Rs 2.5 lakh in the illegal market. The raid was carried out at the house of Mia’s son, Monir Hossain, who managed to flee after spotting the police approaching.

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Sonamura Police Station. Police sources indicated that more arrests are likely in connection with the case.

Continuing the crackdown, Sonamura police arrested two women this morning for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking. Significantly, both women are wives of Monir Hossain, whose residence was raided the previous night.

The arrested women have been identified as Peyara Khatun (47) and Shahina Akter (37).

“Both are residents of Kalapania and lived in the same house”, said the OC.

According to Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das, crucial information was extracted during their interrogation, which may lead to further arrests of drug traffickers in the area.

Police said intensified operations against narcotics trade in Sonamura and adjoining regions will continue.
