Two youths killed in landslide at Teliamura; Minister Bikash Debbarma hands over 4 lakh aid to bereaved families

Date:

Agartala, 13th June 2026:   A pall of grief has descended over the Chakmaghat Muslim settlement in Teliamura subdivision following the tragic deaths of two young men in a sudden landslide on Saturday morning.

According to local reports, three residents of Kunjmura — 20-year-old James Jamatia, 30-year-old Asha Hari Jamatia, and 30-year-old Amulya Dhan Jamatia — had gone to collect soil for construction work. While they were engaged in digging with a vehicle, a massive mound of earth collapsed unexpectedly, burying them under tons of soil.

Local residents rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts without waiting for officials. After prolonged attempts, they managed to pull out driver Amulya Dhan Jamatia, who sustained severe leg injuries. He was rushed to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital and later transferred to GBP Hospital in Agartala as his condition worsened. Tragically, James Jamatia and Asha Hari Jamatia were crushed to death on the spot.

In the aftermath, Minister for Tribal Welfare Bikash Debbarma, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Apurba Krishna Chakraborty, and other officials visited the hospital to meet the bereaved families. Expressing deep sorrow, the minister described the accident as “extremely painful” and assured that the government stands by the victims’ families during this difficult time.

The administration handed over financial assistance of ₹4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Authorities have also announced a full investigation into the incident, as questions are being raised about unsafe and unscientific soil excavation practices in the area.

The sudden deaths have left Kunjmura and surrounding areas in shock. Families are devastated, and the atmosphere remains heavy with mourning. The tragedy has sparked renewed debate over safety measures in manual soil collection, with calls for stricter oversight to prevent such accidents in the future.
