Udaipur’s anti-flood drive backfires: Houses damaged along drain route

Agartala, 3rd September :  A major drainage project initiated by the Udaipur Municipal Council has triggered widespread concern among residents, as several homes along the construction route are reportedly being damaged.

For years, residents of Udaipur subdivision have faced severe waterlogging during even light rainfall, prompting the municipal council to launch a large-scale drainage initiative. The project, which spans from Brakhma Bari to Netaji Subhash Bridge, aims to alleviate chronic flooding in the area.

However, as excavation work progresses, homes situated between Brakhma Bari and Sonamura are reportedly suffering structural damage. On Wednesday, the residence of Manish Kar in the Sonamura area was nearly compromised when digging for the drain reached the front of his property.

Speaking to reporters, Kar acknowledged the importance of the drainage initiative but criticized the execution. “This is a much-needed project, but it should not come at the cost of people’s homes,” he said. Kar further alleged that the municipal council is violating its own building regulations, which require a setback of three to four feet from residential structures.

Local residents have filed complaints, but claim authorities have yet to respond. Many are now urging the council to ensure that construction does not endanger private property and to enforce its own safety norms.

The local people have called on the Udaipur Municipal Council to closely monitor the project and prioritize the protection of residential structures as work continues.
