Uncertainty Looms Over Bharat Ratna Sangh’s Durga Puja Amid Administrative Crackdown

Agartala, 1st September 2024 : In a surprising turn of events, the iconic Bharat Ratna Sangha Durga Puja at Usha Bazar in the capital faces uncertainty this year after decades of being one of the most lavish and celebrated pujas in the state.

The situation has escalated following the dismantling of the Bharat Ratna Sangha clubhouse by the district administration, citing allegations of illegal activities and the use of government land.

For years, Bharat Ratna Sangha has attracted thousands of devotees with its grand celebrations, which are marked by large budgets and elaborate decorations. However, recent actions by the authorities have cast doubt over the continuity of the puja. The club’s clubhouse, a familiar landmark in the area, was demolished in the early hours of the morning, sparking outrage among local residents.

While the administration claims the clubhouse was built illegally on government land, the residents have rallied together in an effort to continue the puja on a smaller scale. Over the past few days, they approached the administration to seek permission for the event. Unfortunately, their appeals have gone unanswered, leading to increased tensions.

On Sunday morning, residents attempted to clean the site to prepare for the upcoming Durga Puja but were met with resistance from officials. The community, particularly the women of the area, expressed frustration and disappointment over the administration’s stance. “We have been performing this puja here for 70 years,” one local resident said. “Why should this year be any different? We are only asking to worship on a smaller scale. This puja means a lot to us.”

Allegations of bias have also emerged, with residents questioning why other clubs located on government land remain untouched by the administration. They argue that the crackdown on Bharat Ratna Sangha is disproportionate and possibly selective.

The dismantling of the clubhouse has also led to claims of theft, with local residents alleging that valuables worth Rs 15 to 20 lakh were stolen during the demolition. One woman demanded that the Chief Minister intervene to allow the puja to take place, stressing that any cancellation would send the wrong message to the community.

As of now, the administration has yet to make a final decision regarding this year’s Durga Puja. The community remains hopeful that they will be granted permission to proceed with the event, even if it is on a smaller scale.
