Agartala, 28th September 2026 : Tension erupted at Warangbari polling station under Maharani police outpost in Udaipur subdivision on Monday following an alleged firing incident during the Village Committee elections, with three persons, including a candidate, reportedly injured.
According to an injured person present at the spot, a group of around six to seven persons allegedly arrived from Amarpur and attempted to enter the polling premises while voting was underway. When they were reportedly stopped, an altercation broke out, during which firearms were allegedly used.
The injured person claimed that two candidates and another worker were assaulted and that one person sustained an injury to the head. He further alleged that mobile phones and other belongings were damaged following the incident.
Later in the evening, speaking to media personnel, one of the protestors alleged that Tipra Motha candidate Khajendra Reang was shot and admitted to Udaipur Sub-Divisional Hospital. He also alleged that Udayram Reang was assaulted and admitted to the District Hospital in Udaipur.
The protestor claimed that voting had been proceeding peacefully since the afternoon, but alleged that a group of around 30 to 40 men had arrived in Baruak Para early in the morning and later began chasing residents and attacking a particular candidate. Following the incident, local residents, particularly women, reportedly blocked the road and demanded the arrest of those responsible.
When asked whom she held responsible for the attack, the protestor said she could not identify the culprit or establish any political affiliation, but maintained that someone was responsible for the incident.
An injured person separately alleged that the attackers were associated with the BJP and included tribal members.
A large police contingent reportedly reached the polling station following the incident and took control of the situation.
Gomati SP informed “First of all, this is completely untrue and merely a rumor. No one has died in the incident. One person sustained a bullet injury and is currently undergoing treatment at Tripura Medical College and Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital, Hapania. We have spoken to the doctors, and his condition is stable. I urge everyone not to spread or circulate such baseless and misleading information. Those responsible for spreading these rumors may face legal action.”
