Agartala, October 14: The villagers of Ward No. 4 of Bhagyapur Gram Panchayat in Dharmanagar blocked the Dharmanagar Kadamtala main road for four hours on Saturday, to demand the repair of a one and a half kilometer road that has not been renovated for 25 years. The road blockade, led by the elderly people of the area, caused a traffic jam on both sides of the road, affecting hundreds of vehicles.
The villagers said that they had blocked the same road at the same place on June 27 for the same reason and had received an assurance from the officials of the works department that the road would be renovated in 70 days. However, even after three and a half months, no work was done on the road, which prompted the villagers to resort to the agitation again.
The villagers said that they had submitted several applications and appeals to the authorities for the road repair, but to no avail. They said that they were facing a lot of problems due to the poor condition of the road, especially during the rainy season. They said that they were determined to continue their blockade until the work began.
The officials of the works department were contacted by the media, but they did not respond. Finally, after four hours of blockade, the works department sent some materials and a contractor to the area and started the work on the road. The villagers then lifted their blockade and expressed their satisfaction.
The villagers said that they had to struggle a lot and face many hardships to get their just demand fulfilled. They said that they hoped that the work would be completed soon and that they would not have to face such a situation again.
