Agartala, 11th September 2025:    A tense standoff erupted in the Amtali area under Khowai police station late last night, following a dispute over the cremation of a cancer victim. The incident led to violence against police personnel and damage to government property, prompting authorities to file a suo motu case against five individuals.

Police reported that Tapan Deb, a resident of Barbil in Khowai succumbed to cancer yesterday evening. Around 10 PM, his family attempted to perform his last rites at the local cremation ground in Amtali. However, villagers reportedly objected, claiming that the body of a cancer patient should not be cremated at that site.

The disagreement quickly escalated into a heated confrontation between the deceased’s family and local residents. Upon receiving information, police arrived at the scene to mediate, but were allegedly attacked by the crowd. One officer sustained minor injuries, and a police vehicle was vandalized during the chaos.

Authorities have registered a case against five individuals, including Sudip Debbarma, the Upa-Pradhan of a political party in the area. Others named in the FIR include Ananda Debnath, Sanjit Debnath, local member Gautam Tanti, and Dipak Debnath. Police alleged that Sudip instigated the villagers and obstructed the cremation process.
