Agartala, 26th November 2025: Dharmanagar witnessed escalating political unrest today following last night’s alleged attempt by miscreants to set fire to the District Congress Office.
Protesting the incident, members of the Congress party staged a road blockade this morning on Central Road, right in front of the Congress Bhavan. Although the blockade was lifted after some time and party leaders began a discussion on Constitution Day inside the office, the situation quickly took a volatile turn.
Soon after the Congress withdrew its blockade, the BJP organised a protest march. At the end of the rally, BJP workers started a road blockade in front of the Congress Bhavan. Meanwhile, workers of the CPI(M), who had gathered near the Dharmanagar SDM office to observe Constitution Day, were returning after completing their programme.
According to allegations, around 200–250 BJP workers suddenly attacked the CPI(M) members as they were passing by the blockade site. The attackers reportedly smashed microphones, musical instruments, a tuk-tuk vehicle, and other party materials belonging to the CPI(M). Several CPI(M) workers were assaulted, leaving four members seriously injured, including former MLA Amitava Datta, Dharmanagar local committee secretary Abhijit Dey, and two others.
Despite the presence of police—including the Additional SP of North District, who was reportedly at the spot—CPI(M) leaders claim that the attack occurred right in front of the security forces.
As tensions rose further, BJP workers allegedly stormed the Dharmanagar District Congress Bhavan, vandalising furniture and assaulting several Congress members. The injured have been admitted to the district hospital for treatment.
With repeated attacks, road blockades, and clashes between rival political groups, Dharmanagar has been engulfed in turmoil. Questions are now being raised about the administration’s ability to control the situation.
