Waqf Amendment Act, a direct attack on constitutional rights: CPI(ML)

Agartala, 13th April 2025:   The CPI(ML) State Secretary Partha Karmakar today strongly criticized the policies of the central and state governments, voicing concerns over issues ranging from rising commodity prices to constitutional rights.

Speaking to media personnel here at Agartala Press Club, Karmakar criticized the recent Waqf Act (Amendment)-2025, calling it “a direct attack on the religious freedom and constitutional rights of the Muslim community.” He argued that the amendment imposes government control over religious institutions, violating Articles 26, 29, 30, and 14 of the Constitution. “This law not only targets Muslims but undermines the spirit of the Constitution and the Republic itself,” Karmakar stated.

The press conference also highlighted the rising costs of essential commodities, including cooking gas, petrol, and diesel. “The price of cooking gas has increased by Rs 50 per cylinder, adding undue pressure on the common man,” Karmakar noted. He pointed out that cylinders under the Ujjwala Yojana now cost Rs 550, while general consumers pay Rs 853. Petrol and diesel prices have risen by Rs 2 per liter, exacerbating the financial strain on citizens. “In a situation where workers face unemployment, low wages, and a lack of government vacancies, these price hikes are unjustifiable,” he added.

Karmakar condemned the “unparliamentary comments” made by opposition MLAs during the budget session, demanding an apology from the council minister or their dismissal. He also accused various government departments, including rural development, public works, police, and water resources, of rampant corruption. “The violence of land mafias is affecting common people,” he said.

The CPI(ML) criticized the Modi government’s response to the Trump administration’s imposition of a 26% duty on Indian exports. “This has endangered India’s economy, medicine, agriculture, and industrial sectors,” Karmakar remarked. He accused the government of surrendering to America and burdening citizens with high import costs, from cooking gas to fighter jets.

The party called for International Workers’ Day on May 1 to be declared a public holiday in Tripura, as it is in states like West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. “This day deserves recognition as a public holiday in Tripura,” Karmakar asserted.

Preparations for the nationwide general strike on May 20, organized by the Central Trade Unions and the National Federation, were also discussed. The CPI(ML) plans to mobilize workers, farmers, students, and Anganwadi workers through campaigns and processions. “We appeal to the INTUC to join this movement,” Karmakar said.

The CPI(ML) concluded the press conference with a firm commitment to uphold the Constitution, democracy, and the rights of the common man, vowing to continue their fight against “fascist, pro-corporate politics.”
