Agartala, 24th May 2025: A surge in thefts across Dharmanagar has sparked widespread panic among residents, with many accusing the Dharmanagar Police of inaction and failure.
In the latest incident, a gang of thieves looted gold ornaments worth nearly Rs 5 lakh from a residence in Ward No. 3 of Dharmanagar Municipality. The victim, Nilendu Das, a resident of North Noapara, reported that the thieves broke into his house while it was completely unoccupied. His wife was attending a social function at a relative’s place in Kaila town, Unakoti district, and Nilendu himself was out for work. Even his mother was not home at the time. Taking advantage of the deserted house, the gang made off with cash and jewellery from Nilendu’s wedding ceremony.
Upon receiving the report, Dharmanagar Police arrived at the scene and recorded the statement of the house owner. However, as in previous incidents, no arrests have been made, nor has any visible progress been reported in tracking down the gang. This is not an isolated case. Over the past several weeks, thefts—both in daylight and at night—have become a near-daily occurrence. From motorcycles to cash and gold, residents are being robbed with alarming frequency. Despite these repeated crimes, the police, who have been recipients of prestigious accolades including the Presidential Collar, have failed to restore public confidence. Residents are now openly questioning the effectiveness of the Dharmanagar police administration.
“If the police are truly alert and active, how are thieves roaming freely and targeting homes at will?” one resident asked. Sleepless nights and heightened fear have become the new normal in several localities. Civic anger is mounting, with citizens accusing the police of setting “a precedent of failure.” The repeated thefts and lack of concrete action have cast serious doubts on the law and order situation in the sub division’
