Agartala, 4th December 2024:   This year, the region is unlikely to experience freezing cold temperatures as cloudy skies are expected to prevent the onset of a harsh winter, according to weather forecasts. Typically, December to February is considered the winter season, but this year, minimum temperatures are predicted to be higher than normal across most parts of the country.

Weather officials estimate that most areas will see higher than normal temperatures this winter. Southern peninsular India might experience normal to below normal maximum temperatures, while north-western, central, eastern, and northeastern regions are likely to experience fewer cold waves.

An official from the Airport-based Meteorological department Partha Roy said “This year, the minimum temperature will fluctuate between 11 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius during the winter season. Similarly, the maximum temperature will range from 20 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius. Last year, the winter temperature ranged from 11 degrees Celsius to 15 degrees Celsius. Hence, we expect a milder winter this year.”

Roy also noted that the monthly minimum temperature in December is likely to be higher than normal in most parts of the country. “The monthly maximum temperature in December may also be higher than normal except for a few areas. Central India might experience normal maximum temperatures. Consequently, cold waves in the north-western, central, eastern, and northeastern parts of the country are likely to be lower than normal,” he added.

The influence of Cyclone Fengal is expected to keep the skies generally cloudy, further reducing the impact of winter. “The temperature difference over the sea surface significantly affects the weather. The current higher-than-normal sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean is influencing the weather conditions in India,” Roy highlighted.

For residents, this means the cold winds of winter might not be as harsh. “Morning walks may not be as enjoyable due to thick fog, but the lack of severe cold can be seen as a small reprieve. However, it also reflects the unpredictable changes in weather patterns, which some might view as nature’s response to human impact,” Roy noted.

The people of Tripura, who have already witnessed intense weather events during the monsoon, are now preparing for a milder winter season as predicted by the meteorological department.
