Woman Alleges Dowry Harassment by Husband and In-Laws, Seeks Police Help in Sonamura

Date:

Agartala, 26th October 2026 : A woman from Tripura has alleged that she was subjected to harassment and abuse over dowry demands by her husband and in-laws, forcing her to leave her marital home with her infant daughter and take shelter at her parental house. The woman, identified as Ruma Begum, has lodged a complaint against her husband, sister-in-law and brother-in-law at Sonamura Police Station.

According to the complaint, Ruma married Nurul Haque Mia, son of Rup Mia of Aralia in Agartala, nearly two years ago. Her father, Farid Mia, is a daily-wage labourer and rickshaw puller who lives in front of a timber mill in the Rangamatia area of Sonamura.

Despite his modest financial circumstances, Farid Mia reportedly made arrangements for his daughter’s marriage to the best of his ability, providing money and other necessary items according to the family’s means.

Ruma’s married life was reportedly peaceful during the initial months. However, she alleged that the situation gradually deteriorated as her husband began pressuring her to bring additional money and dowry from her parental home.

According to her allegations, she was repeatedly subjected to harassment and abuse over the demands. Hoping to preserve his daughter’s marriage and restore peace in her household, Farid Mia reportedly worked hard and provided financial assistance on several occasions despite his limited income.

The family had hoped that the additional support would help resolve the dispute. However, Ruma alleged that the harassment continued despite the money provided by her father.

The situation reportedly became more difficult after the birth of the couple’s daughter. Ruma has also accused her sister-in-law and brother-in-law of subjecting her to harassment. She claimed that the situation worsened after the birth of her child, leaving her struggling to cope with domestic discord while caring for her infant daughter.

Eventually, Ruma said she could no longer endure the circumstances and returned to her parental home with her daughter. She subsequently approached Sonamura Police Station and lodged a complaint against her husband, Nurul Haque Mia, and the two in-laws.

Despite the alleged harassment, Ruma has expressed her willingness to continue her married life and hopes to restore normal relations with her husband. However, she claimed that her husband is no longer interested in taking her back.

She has further alleged that she was threatened with death if she returned to her matrimonial home. Citing concerns for her safety, she said she had sought police intervention.

The allegations have drawn attention to the family’s domestic dispute, with the next course of action now resting with the police. Further details regarding the investigation and the responses of the accused were not available at the time of filing this report.
