Woman assaulted at City Center, husband attacked; One held

Agartala, 3rd October 2025 : A shocking incident of assault marred the festive spirit of Durga Puja on Dashami night as Narayan Ghosh, a resident of Amtali was brutally attacked near the City Center area here while visiting the pandals with his wife and child.

Police sources informed that the attack took place last night when Ghosh and his family were out enjoying the festivities. An unidentified youth allegedly made obscene remarks toward Ghosh’s wife. When Ghosh protested, the youth turned violent and assaulted him severely.

Police arrived promptly at the scene and rushed the bloodied and critically injured Ghosh to IGM Hospital. He was later referred to GB Hospital for further treatment. The accused youth was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Ghosh’s wife stated that they did not know the attacker, who suddenly began harassing her and violently assaulted her husband when confronted.

In a disturbing development the following morning, Ghosh’s wife reportedly saw another suspect loitering outside the police station. She claimed this individual was also involved in the previous night’s assault. The sight of the alleged accomplice triggered a panic attack, causing her to faint. She was immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the city, with residents demanding exemplary punishment for the culprits. The Pradesh Mahila Congress has also intervened, raising serious concerns about women’s safety. Party leaders criticized the state government’s claims of ensuring security for women, stating that even during major festivals, women cannot move freely without fear.

“This is not just an isolated incident, it reflects a deeper failure in ensuring basic safety for women,” said a Mahila Congress spokesperson. The organization has called for a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible.
