Agartala, 25th August 2025: A woman identified as Purnima Das of Bhangarpar in Udaipur was allegedly tied up and had her hair cut off in public by a group of women on suspicion of an extramarital affair.
It is reported that the incident took place on last Friday and was allegedly instigated by local BJP booth president Nitai Dutta and party leader Seema Begum. Eyewitnesses claim that the booth president stood by during the incident and even mocked the victim.
The victim was dragged out of her home by a group of women, tied hand and foot, and humiliated on the roadside while several onlookers including local residents recorded videos instead of intervening. The victim’s husband and in-laws reportedly did not attempt to stop the assault.
The matter came to light only on Sunday after videos of the incident circulated widely on social media, sparking a storm of criticism and demands for strict action.
Radhakishorpur police station staff visited the area following the public outcry. However, instead of taking immediate action against the alleged instigators, reports suggest that police have registered a case against some of the victim’s relatives Manju Rani Das, Putul Rani Das, and Hameda Begum at the RK Pur Women’s Police Station. The main accused including Nitai Dutta have not yet been named in the case.
The incident has once again raised concerns over increasing cases of social degradation and mob justice in Tripura. Rights groups and local residents are demanding swift police action against those responsible for what has been described as an act of “medieval barbarity.”
