Agartala, 29th October 2026 : Around 11 lakh Jan Dhan accounts have been opened in Tripura, including nearly seven lakh accounts held by women, reflecting the expansion of financial inclusion in the state, Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy said on Thursday.
Addressing a blood donation camp organised by Tripura Gramin Bank at its head office premises in Agartala as part of Vigilance Awareness Week (VAW)-2026, themed “Probity for Prosperity”, Roy credited the banking sector with improving rural livelihoods and facilitating the delivery of government assistance. Bank Chairman Satyendra Singh and other officials were present.
“Banks have changed our lives. The difference between the banking system of 10 years ago and today is enormous,” Roy said, highlighting the role of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in bringing rural households into the formal banking network. He particularly acknowledged Tripura Gramin Bank and cooperative banks for extending services to villages and remote areas.
The minister said approximately Rs 7,500 crore had reached beneficiaries through housing-related assistance, generating employment for masons, brick suppliers, sand collectors, painters and other construction workers. He added that more than Rs 1,000 crore had been credited to farmers under PM-KISAN, while paddy procurement payments amounted to around Rs 500 crore. Kisan Credit Card loans worth approximately Rs 2,700 crore had also been extended in the state.
Roy estimated that around Rs 14,500 crore had circulated through various banking-linked schemes and channels, supporting economic activity across Tripura.
He also stressed the importance of digital procurement through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), saying it helped reduce expenditure and curb financial leakages.
Turning to social concerns, Roy urged collective efforts to eliminate child marriage and prevent teenage pregnancies. Citing government identification data, he said around 80,000 children with disabilities had been issued UDID cards in Tripura.
“Development is not merely about constructing buildings and roads; it is about building a better society,” he said, appealing to government employees, media representatives and the public to join the campaign against child marriage.
Roy thanked Tripura Gramin Bank for organising the blood donation camp and inviting him to the programme.
