Agartala, 7th October 2025 : In a tragic incident, a young clouded leopard has died at the Conservation Breeding Centre of Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary on Tuesday.
The leopard, born at the centre, succumbed to anemia, according to sanctuary authorities.
Siddhartha Debbarma, Director of Sepahijala Zoo, explained that the animal’s weak genetic makeup and low immunity were major contributing factors.
“Based on test reports and biopsy results, we found that the leopard died d ue to anemia. Its genetic weakness and low immunity caused the condition. Despite extensive efforts and consultations with veterinarians, we were unable to save it. It is indeed a loss,” he said.
Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is notable for being the first centre in the region where clouded leopards were successfully born and hand-reared.
“There were two clouded leopards at the centre. One of them suddenly stopped feeding, and subsequent tests confirmed that it was suffering from anemia,” Debbarma added.
