Agartala, September 14: A young man named Souraj Reang was found dead on the side of the road in Takshila Para, near the venue of the Bru Sangrama Puja in Manpathar area, on Thursday morning. He had left his home in Gangarai Para on Wednesday night to attend the fair, which is organized every year by the Reang community to worship Kool Devi.
The fair, which is held for two days in the village of Uhapsing Reang, attracts people from across the state and is supported by various government officials. This year, former deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma, minister Bikash Debbarma, minister Shukla Charan Noatia and others were invited by the fair committee to get various facilities from the state government. The fair committee had previously invited former minister Manindra Reang, who belonged to the Left party, but switched allegiance after the change of regime.
The fair, however, lacks proper infrastructure and faces incidents every year. This year, the death of Souraj Reang has cast a shadow over the festivities. He was spotted lying on the road by some residents of Santirbazar, who informed the firefighters. He was taken to Santirbazar Trauma Care Centre, where he was declared dead. His father, Manik Reang, told the media that he suspects foul play in his son’s death and demanded a thorough investigation. The Santirbazar police station staff have started probing the case and are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of death. The body will be handed over to the family members after post-mortem.
