Agartala, 17th August 2025: A 28-year-old man was found dead in a suspected case of suicide, allegedly triggered by prolonged mental harassment by a hotel owner. The incident took place late last night at the residence of the accused, located near the mosque on Chittaranjan Road here.
The deceased identified as Santosh Saha hailed from the Bagbari area of Lembucherra. His body was found inside a room at the home of Liton Deb, the hotel owner under whose employment Santosh had been working.
According to Deb, Santosh had been mentally distressed following the purchase of a vehicle struggling to manage its loan installments. “He had become withdrawn and barely spoke to anyone,” Deb claimed, suggesting financial strain as the cause of the tragedy.
However, Santosh’s sister offered a starkly different account. She alleged that Liton Deb had subjected her brother to persistent psychological torment including false accusations of theft and humiliation. “He couldn’t even celebrate Raksha Bandhan this year because of the constant harassment,” she said, adding that Santosh had frequently confided in her about the abuse over phone calls.
The family has squarely blamed Liton Deb for Santosh’s death and is demanding strict legal action against him.
Upon hearing of the incident, local residents forcibly entered the locked room where Santosh’s body was found. East Agartala police station staff arrived promptly, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is currently underway.
