Agartala, 5th January 2026:  West Agartala Police have apprehended Youth Congress leader Shahajan Islam, who had been evading authorities for several months. His arrest comes in connection with a case involving derogatory and obscene comments posted on social media targeting political leaders.

According to police sources, on June 8, 2025, Shahajan Islam made offensive remarks aimed at former Tripura Chief Minister and current MP Biplab Kumar Deb, as well as the incumbent Chief Minister, Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha. The posts reportedly included personal attacks and critical comments directed at the police administration.

Following the incident, BJP leaders lodged a formal complaint, prompting police to register a case. Shahajan Islam allegedly went into hiding after the complaint was filed. After receiving a tip-off, police traced and arrested him in the Jaynagar area of Agartala.

Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer DP Roy stated, “In June 2025, an incident took place in Santipara where Shahajan Islam made derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and attempted to incite unrest. A scuffle had also occurred. Following a complaint by Nagadhiraj Datta, a case was registered. While we had previously arrested his father and brother, Shahajan Islam remained absconding. Based on a tip-off, we located him in Joypur and have now taken him into custody. He will be produced before the court. Another case has also been registered against him for submitting a fake signature on a bail application.”

Police confirmed that multiple cases, including charges related to an attempt to murder, are pending against Shahajan Islam. Authorities added that further legal proceedings will follow as per the law.
