Hyderabad, November 28, 2024: Prostate enlargement is a common issue affecting many. Current treatments often involve medication followed by surgery. However, both approaches have their downsides, including erectile dysfunction and issues with ejaculation, particularly in younger patients.
For such individuals, Rezum Water Vapor Therapy has emerged as a promising solution, according to Dr. C. Mallikarjuna, Managing Director and Chief Consultant Urologist at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU). Speaking on the occasion of the launch of this treatment, Dr. Mallikarjuna highlighted its benefits. Eminent doctors from Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology Banjara Hills, Dr. Syed Md. Ghouse, Senior Consultant Urologist and Dr. Vijay Kumar Sarma Madduri, Consultant Urologist, were also part of the launch.
“Medications can delay the need for surgery, but over time, the results diminish, and outcomes in patients who delayed the surgery not great. Additionally, both medications and surgeries can cause sexual health issues like erectile dysfunction and ejaculation problems, which can be distressing, especially for sexually active and younger individuals. Rezum Water Vapor Therapy is a breakthrough in addressing these concerns. It offers noticeable results within 15 days to a month.
The treatment uses steam, delivered via injection, to target and shrink the excess prostate tissue compressing the urinary tract. This minimally invasive procedure can be performed under local anesthesia. The natural energy of the steam gradually removes the extra tissue, with results visible over a short period. Typically, one and rarely a second session are sufficient.
The key advantage of Rezum Water vapor Therapy is that it does not cause erectile dysfunction or ejaculation problems. Only 10 percent of patients who are treated with Rezum may find the need for traditional surgery by 10–15 years.
Patients with heart conditions or those on blood-thinning medications often face challenges with prostate treatments, as these medications must be stopped for extended periods. However, with Rezum, the interruption is minimal, making it safer for such individuals. Post-treatment, patients may need to take antibiotics, pain relievers, and keep a catheter for about maximum of 10 days .
While Rezum Water Therapy offers significant benefits, it is not a complete solution for all prostate issues. It may not be suitable for cases with very large prostates or with complications of prostate . However, it is highly effective for young to middle-aged patients with moderate prostate issues,” Dr. Mallikarjuna explained.
Speaking about Rezum Water Therapy , Mr. Sandeep Guduru, Chief Executive Officer, Asian institute of Nephrology and Urology said, ““At AINU, we have always endeavoured to provide our patients with the best available treatments at the highest standards of care. Adding the Rezum water vapour therapy is the latest step to ensure we offer the widest range of treatments for BPH. The incidence of BPH has been increasing in India, and hence it is important to ensure that we have access to the latest technologies and treatments. This new therapy provides options to patients who previously may have been restricted by comorbidities, and thus we are delighted to be the first in Telangana and AP to be offering it.”
