Again put under house arrest: Mirwaiz

Date:

Hurriyat Chairman and Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday said he was barred by authorities from going to Jama Masjid to offer congregational prayers for the second consecutive week.

Mirwaiz termed the restrictions on him as an “authoritarian mindset” by the government.

“Again disallowed from going to Jama Masjid on a Friday for the second consecutive week . As I raise people’s issues and concerns from the pulpit as is my duty, it seems to make the authorities jittery and uncomfortable , so lock him up! As if by locking me up issues will disappear and realty altered. But an authoritarian mindset can’t think beyond .. strongly condemn my house arrest and the imprisonment of thousands of Kashmiri prisoners who are victims of this mindset,” Mirwaiz posted on X.

Mirwaiz also shared a video of the security policemen in front of his residence in the Nigeen area of the city.

There was no word from police or civil administration on the Mirwaiz’s claim of house arrest.

Last Friday, Mirwaiz said that he was not allowed from leaving his residence to lead congregational prayers at Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid and and had wondered if the restrictions were on account of the 32nd anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition.
