Both houses of Parliament adjourned till Monday amid Oppn protest over Adani row, other issues

Date:

Stalemate continued in Parliament, as the Opposition members continued their protests over the alleged bribery charges against Adani, Sambhal violence and other issues, forcing the adjournment of the proceedings of both the houses for the fourth straight day on Friday.

As soon as the Lok Sabha met for the day, some members from Opposition parties mostly from the Congress and Samajwadi Party, entered the Well of the House and shouted slogans, leading to the adjournment till 12 noon.

When the lower house re-convened at 12 noon, Opposition members raised slogans “Modi, Adani Ek Hain”(Modi and Adani are one) and “Sambhal Ke Hathyaaron ko Phansi Do”(Hang the Murderers of Sambhal) entered the well of the House.

Amid sloganeering, Presiding Officer Dilip Saikia said that the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has rejected the adjournment motion. During this, amidst the noise, the Chair completed the process of laying on the table of the house various papers and reports.

Presiding Officer Saikia urged the protesting members to go back to their seats and let the proceedings of the House go on”.

“You please take your seat and raise your issue. The people of the country want their questions to be raised here. The whole country is watching you. This House is the temple of their hope and aspirations and everyone should cooperate in it. Question Hour is your time, so you are requested to let the Question Hour continue. Please play the role of a constructive Opposition. The House is not functioning because of you, this is not good,” Saikia said.

Despite his request, the Opposition continued with their protest forcing the Chair to adjourn the House till 11 AM on Monday i.e 2.12.2024.

Moreover, the Rajya Sabha also adjourned for the day following protest by Opposition over alleged corruption case against Adani group and other issues.

Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar adjourned the Upper House till 11 AM on Monday (2nd December, 2024).

Responding to Opposition members’ demand to have discussion on Adani and other issues by suspending the scheduled proceedings, Dhankhar said that Rule 267 was being weaponised as a mechanism of disruption.

“Now I find Hon’ble Members and I call upon you for deep reflection, Rule 267 is being weaponised as a mechanism of disruption from our normal working. There are very senior members. This cannot be appreciated,” Dhankhar said.

He further said, “The loss of time, the loss of opportunity by not having question hour has given enormous setback to the people at large.”
