Congress MP Rakesh Rathore, who is accused of sexually assaulting a woman, was arrested by the Kotwali police in Sitapur district in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, police sources said here.
Sources said that the police arrested Rathore when he was holding a press conference at his residence. “A local court had issued a non-bailable warrant against the Congress MP, after which he had filed an anticipatory bail petition in the Allahabad High Court, which was rejected by the court,” they said.
Police sources said that after the bail petition was rejected by the High Court, the Congress MP was holding a press conference at his residence when the police arrested him.
It may be noted that two weeks ago a victim woman in her complaint had accused the Congress MP of sexually exploiting her for the last several years by luring her with the promise of marriage. “The victim had provided police the call recording of the conversation between her and the MP in this case,” sources said.
Police sources said that the victim had alleged that she was also being threatened. “A case was registered in the Kotwali Nagar police station in this regard,” they said.
