The NJP bound Darjeeling Himalayan Railway’s
train, popularly known as the Toy train, derailed
at Ghum, nearly 3 km down from this hilltop town, when the engine of
this UNESCO heritage engine jumped the track
this morning, official sources said.
There had been no casualty, and the derailed train was cancelled for
the day.
The New Jalpaiguri bound passengers
made their alternative arrangements on their own for their
respective destination.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) also returned the funds of the
passengers, according to our correspondent, who was
one of the commuters for the NJP station.
A Joy Ride train which was on a trip from Darjeeling to Ghum and back
was also stranded.
The NFR authorities said the clearance of the track would take about
4/5 hours since the inclement weather and late monsoon rains
affected the restoration of the two-foot wide track.
The toy train, which has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage Site
status, operates under the DHR of the Katihar division of NFR.
