Fundamentalist elements have entered Assam ahead of polls: CM

Date:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that certain fundamentalist elements have entered Assam ahead of the next year’s election.

The CM told media on Friday in Guwahati that over 5,000 social media accounts have been activated in the last one month, liking activities of the Assam unit of the Indian National Congress and a particular leader of the party and pushing comments.

“We have done forensic audits of about 2092 such facebook accounts and we came to know that most of them are from outside the country. As many as 700 of such accounts are from Bangladesh, 350 from Pakistan, 50 from Middle East, 35 from Afghanistan and from different other countries like France, Albania and Australia,” he said.

“This is for the first time that we are seeing such huge foreign involvement in Assam elections. All these accounts post hard contents in social media. Besides, what they do is like the activity of Assam unit of the Indian National Congress and one particular leader of Assam,” he said while sharing the details.

The Chief Minister said that the government has taken up the matter seriously. “We have also informed the Central government about this as it concerns national security,” he said.

“There are some interesting trends in these accounts. The accounts from Bangladesh are basically pro-Md. Yunus. The accounts from Pakistan basically endorse pro-Shahbaz Sharif posts. These accounts do not even comment or like posts by Rahul Gandhi but they are active whenever there is an activity from the Assam unit of the Congress and one particular leader of the party in Assam,” he added.

“As all these accounts are from countries located in different time zones, they all must be connected by a group and they are instructed to like or post comments. So, more detailed investigation is needed to unearth the facts. We have informed the Central government over this and we are going to investigate,” said the Chief Minister.
