J&K: Respite from cold as valley receives rain, snow

Date:

As parts of Kashmir received rains and light snow, the residents here got some respite from the freezing cold as the minimum temperatures rose by several degrees in the region.

Except the tourist resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, all weather stations in the valley recorded night temperature above freezing point.

While Gulmarg and Gurez received fresh snowfall last night, plains received rains last night.

The Meteorological Centre said Srinagar received 0.9 mm of rain, Qazigund 2.6 mm, Pahalgam 2.3 mm, Kupwara 5.5 mm and Kokernag 5.6 mm during the last 24 hours.

MeT said Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 2.8 degrees Celsius last night, almost two degrees up from the previous night’s 1.0 degrees Celsius.

The mercury in Qazigund – the gateway town to Kashmir Valley, settled at a 2.8 degrees Celsius.

The night temperature in Gulmarg was recorded at minus 2.5 degrees Celsius.

The night temperature in south Kashmir’s Kokernag settled at 2.3 degrees Celsius as compared to the previous night’s 1.1 degrees Celsius.

The mercury in Pahalgam hill resort, in south Kashmir, settled last night at 1.2 degrees Celsius

Leh continues to freeze as the mercury settles at a low of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius.

The MeT officials on Saturday morning predicted snowfall at isolated places mainly over higher reaches. There may be temporary disruption in surface transportation over major passes today, MeT said

The weather would remain cloudy in Kashmir.

The weather department said there would be mainly dry weather for ten days from December 11 with brief spells of light rain and snow at isolated places.

There is no forecast of any major snow spell.

“From tomorrow, expect warmer days and colder nights,” the MeT officials said.
