Kerala Assembly witnesses unruly scenes, Speaker’s office blocked

Date:

The Kerala Legislative Assembly on Wednesday witnessed unruly scenes after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) members blocked Speaker AN Shamseer’s entry to his office following the denial of an adjournment motion over the public brutality on a 16-year-old school girl at Chenkottukonam.

Opposition members alleged that Congress member Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan was manhandled when the Watch and Ward staff and the members of the ruling party tried to ensure the Speaker’s entry to his office.

Several Opposition members including M Vincent, Saji Joseph, AKM Ashraf were forcibly removed from the spot.

Congress member Saneesh Kumar Joseph fell unconscious in front of the Speaker’s office during the scuffle. RMP MLA KK Rema said she was dragged through the floor by the Watch and Ward staff. Meanwhile, Saneesh Kumar was rushed to a nearby hospital. Later, KK Rema visited a hospital and wore a sling on his right hand.

Earlier, Opposition members staged protest and tried to disrupt the proceedings demanding a statement on the Brahmapuram fire incident. Opposition leader VD Satheesan said the Chief Minister failed to respond on the fire incident for the last several days. When the Chief Minister began to explain about the fire issue, Opposition members staged a walkout protesting against the denial of the yesterday’s adjournment motion over the Brahmapuram fire.

Saying that Speaker AN Shamseer was denying the rights of the Opposition, VD Satheesan said the Speaker is being dictated by the Chief Minister to avoid discussions on some serious issues.

The Speaker’s continuous stand against the Opposition parties led to stage a sit-in-dharna in front of the Speaker’s office by them leading to clashes between the Opposition members and the Watch and Ward staff.
