Kharagpur: ASI among two killed, six injured

An Assistant Sub-Inspector of West Bengal Police including two people were killed and six others injured when an Audi mowed them over and bang hit a shop at the industrial town of Kharagpur in West Medinipur in the wee hours of Saturday, official source said.

On duty, ASI, identified as Ramananda Dey, was crushed to death by the four-wheeler when he got down. Along with two Police Constables from his van at a closed railgate at Benapur on the Mokrompur state highway.

Besides the ASI of Kharagpur police station, another civilian, identified as Sheikh Jahangir, who was fatally wounded, succumbed to his wounds at a local hospital.

The six others, including the two Police constables, have been admitted to the hospital, sources added.

The mishap happened around 0100 hours when the Audi ran over the victims, banged a post, and ploughed over the roadside tea shop. Police said the driver, who was also wounded, was drunk.

The fatalities happened barely fifteen hours after a 7-year-old student at Barisha School was crushed to death by a truck at Behala in south Kolkata, in which the agitated local people torched a police van and a motorcycle.

Police arrested at least 10 people accused of rioting in public.

A 26-year-old Scooterist, identified as Sunanda Das, a hotel employee, was crushed to death by a trailer near Second Hooghly Bridge around 2300 hours, Kolkata police added.

She was returning home after a day’s work. She was taken to the SSKM Hospital, where she succumbed to the injury.
