Kharge slams Modi govt over attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh

Date:

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday slammed the Modi government over the rising incidents of attacks against religious minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh and expressed shock over the murder of prominent Hindu Community leader Bhabesh Chandra Roy.

Kharge, on his social media handle X, said, “The brutal murder of Shri Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a prominent leader of the Hindu community, is proof that a smiling Modiji meeting with the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh was a failure.” He added that “Religious minorities, especially our Hindu brothers and sisters, are constantly being persecuted in Bangladesh”.

Pointing out to a reply given by the government in the Parliament, the Congress President said, “In the past two months in Bangladesh, 76 attacks were carried out on Hindus in which 23 were killed. Moreover, attacks on other religious minorities are also continuing”.

He also slammed a recent controversial statement made by the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh regarding India’s North-Eastern states, calling it “condemnable and disappointing.”

The Congress president also alleged that “efforts are underway in Bangladesh to erase the memories of the 1971 Liberation War, which India supported at a great human and economic cost. Such actions are an attempt to weaken the historical and emotional ties that bind our two nations”.

Reaffirming India’s long-standing commitment to the peace and prosperity of Bangladesh, Kharge said, “Since 1971, India has always worked towards ensuring peace and prosperity for all the people of Bangladesh, recognising it as vital for the stability and progress of the subcontinent”.

It may be mentioned that 58-year-old Bhabesh Chandra, Vice President of the Biral unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, was abducted and killed in Dinajpur’s Biral Upazila.
