A local BJP activist’s wife was shot dead and a man sustained serious injury when some people allegedly fired at them in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, a senior police official said on Monday.
According to the official, the incident occurred Sunday evening in Rajura tehsil of Chandrapur district when the assailants came to Rajura to kill Lalli Shergill, a resident of Somnathpur ward, over an old rivalry.
When Shergill noticed them, he entered the house of his friend Sachin Dohe, vice president of the BJP’s youth wing, the official said.
The assailants ran after Shergill and started firing indiscriminately at him.
But Sachin Dohe’s wife, Purvsha, who came into the front yard of the house, got shot in the chest, and she collapsed. Shergill was shot in the back, the police official said.
Both were rushed to a rural hospital in Rajura, where Purvsha was declared dead while Shergill sustained serious injuries and was shifted to a hospital in Chandrapur for treatment, the police official told UNI.
Rajura police have arrested two people in this connection.
Further investigation is underway, he added.
