Mamata charges Governor Bose with violating Constitution by appointing VCs

Date:

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has charged Governor C V Ananda Bose with violating the Constitution by appointing ” his friends as vice-chancellors in the state-owned universities.

‘We have another eye over us now. I respect his ( governor) chair but he is violating the Constitution. Look at the condition of the universities. He is appointing his friends as vice chancellors. For instance, an IPS officer with no experience as a professor has been appointed vice chancellor. The BJP cell president was appointed as V-C of Jadavpur University.”

The governor, by virtue of his office, is also the chancellor of the state-owned universities.

Banerjee, who is also the ruling Trinamool Congress chairperson, said this while addressing his party’s student wing’s foundation day on Monday in the city.

” There should be mutual respect towards the roles dictated to us as per the law. Their position is not the same as that of the Chief Minister.

While they are nominated, we are elected. Nobody should try to undermine an elected government or stoke communal fires,” the chief minister said.

She also pointed out that she also noticed that people were being brought in to set up contact numbers for universities in the Raj Bhavan.

Students are being called and questioned about corruption. But first, they must answer: Who engaged in corruption during the time of demonetization? the TMC supremo asked.

Closure of banks, shady foreign deals, commodification of the private sector, corruption in Covid vaccinations, and suppressing facts—who engaged in such graft? Banerjee questioned.

I have never seen such a vindictive government. I got an input on Sunday saying they will arrest Abhishek Banerjee ahead of the elections.

During the recent raid, they took away all devices without prior intimation and uploaded their own files on the existing computers.

She continued ” We have gathered proof that those files were uploaded by them Directorate of Enforcement (ED) and were not there earlier.

Meanwhile, even as a work order has been issued to install CCTV cameras in all vantage points of troubled-torn Jadavpur University. A section of students demanded accommodating all stakeholders in the decision-making process.

The students even staged a protest while the officiating VC, Buddhadeb Sahu, was coming out of his chamber on Monday. There had been protests against the installation of CCTV cameras in the past, and the same was also raised despite UCG’s ultimatum to set them up such monitoring gadgets within three weeks, or face the consequences.

After the death of a teenage undergraduate student following a fall from the hostel’s 2nd floor on August 10, there have been demands from a majority of students and other stakeholders, including the teaching community, for setting up the CCTV cameras.

The university has already issued a work order to a private company to set up 10 such cameras in vital areas, including the entry and exit gates.
