Mehbooba demands urgent scrutiny of all joint interrogation centres

Date:

A Day after Supreme Court ordered a CBI probe in Kupwara custodial torture case of policeman in 2023, Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti today demanded urgent systemic reform and scrutiny of all joint interrogation centres(JICs).

“A man was tortured so brutally that his genitals were mutilated is a chilling reminder of custodial abuse in J&K. SC’s order for a CBI probe, arrests & ₹50L compensation is a long overdue step,” she said in a post on X.

“This isn’t an aberration, systemic reform & scrutiny of all JICs is urgently needed.”

The Supreme Court yesterday ordered a CBI probe into allegations of custodial torture of constable Khursheed Ahmad Chohan at the

JIC in Kupwara district.

The court directed the immediate arrest of the police officers involved and ordered J&K to pay Rs 50 lakh as compensation to the victim.
