Newborn die in Guwahati medical college, parents allege negligence

Date:

In a shocking incident one infant died while the conditions of two others
were stated to be critical after they fell from a phototherapy bed of the Neonatal ICU at the
Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) this morning.
The deceased baby girl was born on August 15 and was admitted in the NICU for treatment of jaundice, family members of the deceased said.
The family members alleged poor arrangements and negligence inside the NICU which led to the incident and said that they are going to lodge a formal FIR against the GMCH authorities soon.
Countering the allegation of poor infrastructure of the NICU, the doctors of the hospital said that the NICU is designed to accommodate approximately 80 newborns.
“However, we have to often accommodate more as the rush is more at GMCH. We cannot refuse anyone and hence sometimes more than one baby is kept in one bed,” said a doctor of the GMCH
on condition of anonymity.
He however, termed it as a tragic accident and urged people not to consider the GMCH as unsafe.
“This is like any other accident. This is the first such case in the NICU, this kind of incident has never happened here before. We are checking the CCTV footage and carrying out an inquiry as to what led to such a tragic accident,” said the senior doctor.
