NHRC notice to Andhra Chief Secy, DGP over public assault of woman by moneylender

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh after it took suo motu cognizance of a media report concerning the brutal public assault of a woman by a local moneylender in Narayanapuram village, Kuppam Mandal, Chittoor district, in the Southern State.

The top rights body has called for a detailed report in the matter within two weeks, according to a statement from the NHRC here.

According to the media report, dated June 17, 2025, the incident occurred on June 16, when the woman was allegedly tied to a tree and beaten in full public view by a moneylender, after her husband failed to repay a loan of Rs 80,000 borrowed three years ago. It is reported that the victim was later freed by local villagers.

In the statement, the NHRC said: “The contents of the media report, if true, raise serious issues of human rights violations. The Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.”

The NHRC said that it has called for the report to include details of the action taken against the accused, and steps initiated for the safety and rehabilitation of the victim.
