PM Modi arrives in Brunei to warm welcome

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday arrived in the Brunei capital to a ceremonial welcome. It is the first ever bilateral visit by an Indian PM to the Southeast Asian sultanate.

The PM was received at the airport by the Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah.

The MEA spokesperson in a post on X said:

“PM @narendramodi alights in Brunei to a ceremonial welcome. Warmly received by Crown Prince His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah.

“This visit is special as it is the first ever bilateral visit by an Indian PM and is taking place as the two countries are celebrating 40 years of the establishment of diplomatic ties this year.”

The PM was warmly welcomed by an enthusiastic Indian diaspora, with many shouting “Modi, Modi”.

In his departure statement, the PM said that he looks forward to his meetings with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and other members of the Royal family to take the bilateral relationship to new heights.

From Brunei, the PM goes to Singapore.

He said that both nations are important partners in India’s Act East Policy and the Indo-Pacific Vision.

“I am confident that my visits would further strengthen our partnership with Brunei, Singapore and the larger ASEAN region.”
