Polling for next president: Yogi casts first vote in UP

 Polling for the election of the next President of the country started at the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Bhawan on Monday.

Majority of the MLAs have already reached Lucknow to participate in the polling, being held at Tilak Hall.

There are 403 members in UP Assembly and barring five, who will cast their votes elsewhere, remaining legislators will practice their franchise in Lucknow itself.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was among the prominent voters to cast their vote in the morning.

The polling which began at 10 am will continue till 5 pm.

National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which has fielded Droupadi Murmu as its candidate, has support of 243 MLAs, including 12 of Apna Dal (Sonelal) and six of Nishad Party. In addition to this BJP has 62 MPs and 25 Rajya Sabha members from the state.

BJP’s ally Apna Dal too has two MPs in Lok Sabha, including Union Minister Anupriya Patel.

Besides, some opposition parties, including Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Jansatta Dal (Loktantrik) and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) have also announced their support for the NDA candidate.

While BSP has one MLA and 10 MPs, Jansatta Dal has two MLAs and SBSP, which is an ally of Samajwadi Party (SP) has six MLAs in the lower house.

SP which is supporting joint candidate of the opposition Yashwant Sinha has 111 members and its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) has eight MLAs. Congress too has two MLAs and one MP in UP. In addition to this SP has three MPs in Lok Sabha and five members in Rajya Sabha.
