Raut’s arrest: RS adjourns till noon

Date:

The Rajya Sabha adjourned till 12pm on Monday amid uproar by Shiv Sena over the arrest of its leader and MP Sanjay Raut in Mumbai by the Enforcement Directorate.

Uproar began minutes after the proceedings started for the day as Sena MP Anil Desai forcefully raised the issue of Raut’s arrest.

“That has got nothing to do with the House, please go to your seat. You are harming interest of others. Anil Desai please go back to your seat. You cannot use the House to settle scores outside,” Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu said.

Before adjourning the House, Naidu said ‘Go back to your seat’ thrice to Anil Desai.

Amid row over the arrest of Raut’s arrest by the ED, party MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also submitted a suspension of business notice on alleged “misuse of premier investigative agencies by central government for political agendas” to Naidu.

From the beginning of the Monsoon Session on July 18, Opposition has been raising demands to discuss price rise, hike in GST rate, alleged misuse of central agencies and other issues but Naidu has not admitted the notices under their chosen Rule 267.

Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha also submitted a suspension of business notice under Rule 267 on the issue of MSP, withdrawal of cases registered against farmers and punishment to perpetrators of Lakhimpur Kheri massacre.

Besides, AAP’s Sanjay Singh also gave a suspension of business notice to discuss price rise and inflation on Monday.

As per the order paper of the House on Monday, two bills — ‘The Weapons of Mass Destruction and their Delivery Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Amendment Bill 2022’ and ‘The Indian Antarctic Bill, 2022’- have been listed for consideration and passing.
