RS: Opposition corners government on Maha Kumbh stampede

Date:

The Opposition on Tuesday tried to corner the government on the Maha Kumbh stampede and accused it of failing to address the unemployment issue and communal tension due to the government’s policies.

Participating in the discussion on the address on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha, Trinamool Congress member Sagarika Ghosh said, “The present government is living in a dream world and is cut off from reality”.

She said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had come to power with the slogan of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance”, but the truth is that today there is less work, more publicity and the tragic stampede in Prayagraj Mahakumbh is a recent example of this.

Raising the problems of Odisha, Manas Ranjan Mangaraj of Biju Janata Dal said that even after a long time of independence, many districts in the state have not been connected with the rail network.

Manoj Kumar Jha of RJD suggested that by changing the established tradition in the matter of President’s address, the task of preparing it should be left to the President himself instead of the Council of Ministers. He sought clarification regarding the alleged missing people in the Mahakumbh tragedy.

Jha expressed concern over the spread of ‘fanaticism’ instead of ‘religiousness’ in the country. He raised the issue of rising income inequality and appealed for dialogue with farmers.

The RJD member stressed the need to prepare a comprehensive plan to remove unemployment and said that this is a problem for which there is no quick solution, but this problem needs to be accepted and not played with numbers.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) member KR Suresh Reddy also suggested involving a large number of young officers from the Indian Administrative Service and state administrative services while arranging mega events like Kumbh.

He said that for such officers who will hold the responsibility of Secretary level in future, these events can be an opportunity to understand the diversity of India and gain unique experience about event management. Adding that there is still time to conduct this experiment in the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh.

Reddy also lauded the achievements of the Modi government in the last ten years, but said a lot remains to be done in the area of water resources utilisation.

He questioned the functioning of the river water dispute tribunals and said that even after generations, they are not able to provide a solution.
