The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court in the city will decide the quantum of punishment to the woman doctor’s rape and murder convict and civic volunteer Sanjay Roy on Monday (today), court sources said.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das whilst convicting Roy, a civic volunteer attached to Kolkata Police, during the verdict after a brief hearing on Saturday said the minimum
possible sentence would be life imprisonment while the maximum
sentence would be death penalty.
Roy was held a lone guilty in the brutal rape and murder of the
on-duty 2nd year post-graduate trainee resident doctor at the
state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024.
Sources said the court relied on forensic evidence and talked to 50
witnesses who pointed to Roy’s involvement in the horrendous crime,
which rocked the country.
Meanwhile, three-tier security arrangements are being set up in and
around the Sealdah court, sources added.
