Sudha Murty takes oath as Rajya Sabha member

Days after her nomination to the Upper House of Parliament, author Sudha Murty on Thursday took oath as a member of Rajya Sabha. Her husband and Infosys founder Narayana Murthy was present during her oath-taking ceremony in the chamber of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar in New Delhi.

Sudha Murty’s nomination was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of International Women’s Day, recognising her dedication to social work, philanthropy, and education.

Her commitment to uplifting the underprivileged segments of society through her initiatives is truly commendable.

“I am delighted that the President of India has nominated Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy, and education have been immense and inspiring.

“Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny,” PM Modi posted on X.

Sudha Murty’s role in providing a seed capital of Rs 10,000 for Infosys, which has grown into a global powerhouse valued at $80.52 billion, underscores her foresight and support for entrepreneurship.

Sudha Murty completed her engineering with top honors from the Institute of Engineers and then pursued her ME from the Indian Institute of Science. She began her professional career with TELCO.

Additionally, her literary contributions in both English and Kannada have enriched literature and inspired many.

Furthermore, her efforts in establishing orphanages, promoting rural development, and advocating for better educational resources demonstrate her deep-rooted commitment to societal welfare.

Receiving the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan in 2023 further validated her remarkable contributions to Indian society.

With her newfound platform in the Rajya Sabha, Sudha Murty is poised to continue her impactful work on a larger scale, contributing to the betterment of the nation.
