UP govt to implement Police Commissionerate system in Agra, Ghaziabad and Prayagraj

Date:

On the lines of Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and Noida the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to implement a Police Commissionerate system in Agra, Ghaziabad and Prayagraj.

A proposal in this regard was passed by the state cabinet in its meeting held here on Friday which was chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Giving details of the proposal, Urban Development Minister AK Sharma said, “As per the proposal the entire area of these districts will be declared as metropolitan areas after which the commissionerate system will be implemented.”

He said that Agra having a population of 44,18, 797 as per the 2011 census is important from industrial, tourism and law and order point of view. Similarly, Ghaziabad having a population of 46,61,452 as per 2011 census is also a big and busy district. It is a part of the National Capital Region (NCR) and is also important from an industrial point of view,” he said.

Sharma said that Prayagraj having a population of around 60 lakh is important from religious and cultural point of view. “Besides, Maha Kumbh is to be organised in Prayagraj in the year 2025,” the Minister said.

Though Sharma did not divulge that officer of which rank will be appointed as the Police Commissioner in these districts, official sources said that an officer of Inspector General of Police (IG) rank or above will be posted as the commissioner.

It may be noted that the Police Commissionerate system was first implemented in Lucknow and Noida in 2020. Later, the government implemented the commissionerate system in two more districts including Kanpur and Varanasi in 2021.
