Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala today said that the Voter Rights Yatra being carried out in Bihar is not just a campaign against “vote theft” but a larger battle to safeguard democracy and people’s rights, which will have “revolutionary consequences.”
While talking to the media persons hete , Surjewala alleged massive voter list irregularities in Bihar, accusing the Election Commission of turning a blind eye.
He claimed that in just three districts Patna, Madhubani and East Champaran over 10.63 lakh voters’ names have been struck off.
“In Madhubani alone, voters’ names have been deleted in eight constituencies, and in seven constituencies of Patna. The number of deletions is far greater than the winning margin of the last elections,” Surjewala said.
He further alleged that thousands of fake voters had also been added, citing the example of Valmiki Nagar in West Champaran, where about 1,000 voters are enrolled both in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
Referring to Bihar’s development record, Surjewala said the state has fallen behind on all fronts.
“Nearly nine crore people live on less than Rs 67 a day. Health services are collapsing, with around 72 per cent of doctors’ posts lying vacant. In the education sector too, 59% of posts reserved for women and 66% of general category posts are unfilled,” he added.
