Agartala, 15th May 2026: The Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress has strongly condemned the rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl in Chandanmura village under Sonamura subdivision on April 29, 2026. Party leaders alleged that women continue to face violence and insecurity in BJP-ruled states, including Tripura, where the “double-engine government” has failed to ensure justice and safety for women.
Addressing the protest, Pradesh Mahila Congress President Sarbani Ghosh Chakraborty said, “Wherever BJP is in power, women are being harassed and assaulted. In many cases, BJP leaders themselves are linked to such incidents. In Tripura too, women are unsafe because culprits are not receiving proper punishment.”
Yesterday, the Sonamura District Mahila Congress submitted a five-point memorandum to Sonamura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das, demanding a fair and speedy investigation into the case. The delegation first visited the victim’s family in Chandanmura before proceeding to the police station.
District Mahila Congress President Sefio Pervin urged people across communities to unite in protest against such heinous crimes, stating, “Justice must not remain unheard. The guilty must face exemplary punishment.”
The Sonamura District Mahila Congress demanded a fair investigation into Sonamura PS Case No. 36/2026. They urged authorities to probe the involvement of all individuals linked to the crime. The memorandum stressed that the investigation must be completed within a proper timeframe and a charge sheet submitted to the court without delay. It further called for the collection of medical evidence to ensure a proper trial. Finally, the leaders insisted that the accused be kept in judicial custody during the trial so that the victim is not deprived of justice.
The delegation included Pradesh Mahila Congress President Sarbani Ghosh Chakraborty, District Mahila Congress President Sefio Pervin, Vice President Subhadra Chakraborty, leaders Gauri Majumdar and Peyara Khatun, among others.
This incident has reignited concerns over women’s safety in Tripura and added pressure on the administration to deliver swift justice.
