India’s Selva P Thirumaran clinched a silver medal in the men’s triple jump at the World Athletics U20 Championships, taking India’s tally to three.
With a personal best leap of 16.15m on Friday, Thirumaran finished behind Jaydon Hibbert of Jamaica, who won the gold medal with a championship record effort of 17.27m. Viktor Morozov of Estonia took the bronze with 16.13m.
From Thirumaran’s six attempts, only the first three were valid and the rest were fouls. The 17-year-old’s medal-winning effort came in the second jump – the other two measured 16.11m and 16.09m.
Earlier, India won bronze medal in the 4×400 mixed relay and a silver in the women’s 400m with Rupal Chaudhary becoming the first Indian to win two medals to win two medals in a single edition of the world championships.
The Indian women’s 4x400m relay team comprises Summy, Priya Mohan, Rajitha Kunja and Rupal Chaudhary has qualified for the 4x400m relay finals with a national U20 record time of 3:34.18.
A 31-member Indian team was sent to Cali for the junior world championships. India finished with three medals last year in Nairobi – two silvers and a bronze.
