The death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar once again surfaced in the state Assembly on Monday, with Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman alleging that a suicide note purportedly written by the late police chief had been removed and kept concealed.
The issue was raised by Roy Barman shortly before the Question Hour began on the final day of the Assembly session. Referring to the DGP’s wife, the Congress legislator claimed that she had arrived in Tripura on Sunday and sought the original note allegedly written by her husband before his death.
According to Roy Barman, the DGP’s wife also claimed to have a photograph of the note and wanted the document to be made available.
The Congress MLA’s remarks immediately drew the intervention of Assembly Speaker Rampada Jamatia, who asked him not to pursue the matter during the Question Hour. The Speaker said the issue could not be taken up in the manner being attempted, as Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha had already made statements in the House regarding the DGP’s death on two occasions.
The Speaker also urged Roy Barman, being a senior member of the House, not to make statements that could create confusion among the public and directed him to resume his seat.
The intervention led to a protest by Opposition legislators. Congress and CPI(M) MLAs entered the well of the Assembly carrying placards and raised their concerns over the alleged disappearance of the suicide note.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath then intervened and requested the Speaker to allow the Question Hour to proceed, suggesting that the Opposition be given an opportunity to raise the matter after the scheduled proceedings.
Following the minister’s intervention, the protesting MLAs eventually returned to their seats and the Assembly proceedings resumed.
The allegation regarding the removal and concealment of the purported suicide note was raised by the Opposition in the Assembly and has not been independent established.
